The first Carpet of Flowers was originally created in 1971 in the Grand-Place in Brussels as a way to build interest in begonias. Craftspeople arrange the carpet by hand directly onto the square's cobblestones and without any soil.

The first Carpet of Flowers was originally created in 1971 in the Grand-Place in Brussels as a way to build interest in begonias. Craftspeople arrange the carpet by hand directly onto the square's cobblestones and without any soil. This year's carpet, featuring nearly a million begonias spanning 300 square meters, had a medieval design.
