Meet Heuchera ‘Spellbound’

Terra Nova Nurseries is widely known for breeding outstanding heuchera varieties, and ‘Spellbound’ is no exception. This new variety features a dense, multi-crown habit and beautiful silver foliage with tints of rose-purple. Its lovely, sculptured leaves and deeply-lobed, lightly-ruffled foliage make this heuchera a garden gem.
Heuchera ‘Spellbound’ is a great container plant, or it can be used as a focal point or an accent in the landscape. But, most notably, this variety has H. villosa breeding from Terra Nova Nurseries. This gives the plant a robust ability to grow in a variety of climates, including regions with extreme heat and humidity, such as the Deep South. Additionally, ‘Spellbound’ attracts hummingbirds during the spring and summer seasons and has attractive winter color.
This vigorous heuchera features several improvements in comparison to earlier generation heucheras like ‘Plum Royale’ and ‘Sugar Plum.’ For example, ‘Spellbound’ is a larger, more vigorous variety with a denser crown and more sculptured leaves. These features offer containers and landscape areas more texture and enhanced beauty. Also, when grown in full sun, the leaves display rose-purple tones during spring and fall. Silver tones are more prevalent when exposed to shade.
Growing Heuchera ‘Spellbound’
‘Spellbound’ prefers moderately well-drained, organic soil. When grown in a greenhouse, the soil should be kept reasonably dry between watering. Outdoors, ‘Spellbound’ requires an average amount of water; it’s better kept too dry rather than overly wet.
This fast-growing plant performs best in USDA Zones 4 to 9 and needs plenty of sun exposure for its true beauty to emerge. ‘Spellbound’ produces charming white flowers on short spikes during the summer, providing retailers with a unique selling point.
Creating ‘Spellbound’ Combos
The unique and improved qualities in ‘Spellbound’ provide a wealth of creative container options. Retailers will be enthralled at how well ‘Spellbound’ complements other varieties such as coreopsis ‘Garnet,’ sedum ‘Raspberry Truffle’ and thalictrum ‘Black Stockings.’ The use of these different textures and the amazing blend of pinks and purples yields beautiful, dramatic containers.
