Benary's Ptilotus 'Joey' Back In The News
Benary’s unique ptilotus variety was a big hit back in 2009, when it debuted and earned a Medal of Excellence for Industry’s Choice. Now, ‘Joey’ is bracing to take Europe by storm with another big award win.
Benary’s ptilotus ‘Joey’ was recently named a top 2012 plant by FloraHolland, which awarded the variety the Glass Tulip in its bedding plant category.
The awards jury found ‘Joey’ to be “innovative, soft and caressable.” Questions were raised about whether ‘Joey’ could withstand rain, but it did.
‘Joey’ is native to Central Australia. The ptilotus’ nativity is why it is extremely tolerant of heat and drought, as well as able to adapt well to other conditions. Large, conical spikes of feathery flowers top ‘Joey’s thick silver green foliage.
The 3- to 4-inch bottlebrush flower spikes are glistening silver with a darker neon pink color near the tips.
‘Joey’ offers growers exceptional germination rates and a high percentage of transplantable plugs. Short crop times (approximately 14 to 16 weeks) allow for quick returns on this truly unique crop.
‘Joey’ is as an accent in mixed containers or as a compliment in annual flower beds. It is a natural in any sunny garden location.
