The top performers thrived in the hottest drought since 1988.

Trial Location: Urbana, Illinois

Planting Dates: May16 to May 30, 2012

Number And Types Of Entries: 1,071 varieties trialed in 14-inch single-variety containers, 6-foot mixed species containers, rows, and display beds. Both full sun and lath-house trials were conducted. All winners reported below were in full sun.

Weather: Extremely hot and dry – longest prolonged drought and excessive heat since 1988
