OFA Short Course Greenhouse Tour At A Glance

Participants in the OFA Short Course Grower Learning and Diagnostic Tour took a look at two operations, Krueger-Maddux Greenhouses in Sunman, Indiana, and Diefenbacher Greenhouses in Cincinnati, Ohio. At each facility, university researchers were also on hand to present mini clinics on scouting, lighting, nutrition and other production issues.
Just one section of the 8-acres of outside growing area at Krueger-Maddux Greenhouses. A bioremediated water system provides the 25 million gallons of water used annually.
Diefenbacher Greenhouses is a 4-acre operation in Cincinnati, Ohio that supplies bulbs, Easter lilies, annuals, fall crops and poinsettias to independent garden centers, landscapers and retail florists.
Roberto Lopez of Purdue University demonstrates how light levels can change dramatically depending on the location in the greenhouse.
Filled pots are stacked with dividers in between layers to distribute the weight and avoid compaction of the media.
Simple wire holders that hold four 8-inch pots each increase the production space at Dieffenbacher.
