Toronto Requiring Green Roofs

The city of Toronto is now among the few major North American cities leading impressive charges for green roofs.

June 9, 2009

Toronto city council recently adopted a bylaw requiring all new developments over 21,500 square feet to commit roof space to green roofs.

The larger the gross floor area of new buildings is, the larger the green roof space commitment Toronto's city council expects from developers. The largest green roof coverage area the city council will require is 60 percent of roof space, but only for buildings that exceed 215,000 square feet.
