AmericanHort Hosting Webinar On Overtime Rule Compliance

overtimeWith growing concern over the looming December 1 effective date for the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) overtime rule, AmericanHort and its grassroots allies have joined on a letter endorsing Rep. Kurt Schrader’s (D-OR) Overtime Reform and Enhancement Act, H.R.5813.

The bill would modestly increase the current $23,660 “white collar exemption” minimum salary threshold, to $35,984 on December 1. Further increases would be phased in over the next three years, eventually bringing the threshold to the level established under the new DOL rule ($47,476) on Dec. 1, 2019. The bill would also eliminate the automatic indexing that is part of the DOL rule; however, it would retain the authority of the Secretary of Labor to go through rulemaking to update the threshold in the future.

However, the path to enactment is tricky, according to Craig Regelbrugge, AmericanHort’s Senior Vice President — Industry Advocacy & Research.

“The only practical way the bill could be enacted this year is if it is incorporated into an omnibus spending package in December.”

Meanwhile, AmericanHort is hosting an overtime rule compliance webinar on Thursday, September 29 at 2:00 p.m. EST. Sign up now to find out what you need to do before the law goes into effect.
