How To Make Your Website More Google-Friendly

Do you want to make your business easier to find on Google? During a presentation at Cultivate’15 this past July, Katie Dubow of the Garden Media Group offered several tips on how you can use search engine optimization (SEO) tactics and Google’s search features and updates to your advantage.

Here are some of the suggestions Dubow offered:

Optimize your website for mobile. “Google is rewarding mobile-optimized websites with higher search rankings, while penalizing non-mobile-optimized sites,” she said. One small but effective step you can take is to make your font size large enough so site visitors don’t need to zoom in to read your text.

Use long-tail keywords in your customer’s voice. In other words, use a more conversational tone and try to think of questions someone might type into Google’s search box. Test a search to make sure the results mean what you think they mean.

Optimize your site for local. “Incorporate local search keywords naturally in your site content to capture search traffic for your industry and location,” said Dubow. “Excluding your location, even for Internet-based businesses, misses out on a lot of potential customers who prefer to do business locally.”

With us being a local Garden Mart, using local words like the city you’re in, listing the local growers you buy from, your growing zone, is a great idea and has worked for us without spending money on a SEO company. We rank on the 1st page of Google with the big stores, so it does work.
