They’re two revolutionary plants that got the industry talking over the last two years. Some growers love them while others loath them. But rather than pore over your own emotional response to such plants, you should instead be asking consumers what they think of them. At least that’s the advice one reader offers in response to Managing Editor Kevin Yanik’s September column, “Innovation Critics Not Welcome.” The reader’s advice:

“The great thing about the market is that bad ideas don’t tend to last. If you’re not trying new things you’ll be a dinosaur soon enough. And if you pay attention to your customers you’ll find the good ideas that help you grow. I absolutely hate black petunias. But they look great at my mom’s house. Pay attention to your customers.     I always tell my stores you dont have to like it, you just have to SELL IT. We all have different tastes, and if it doesn’t appeal to you, it doesn’t mean someone else may not LOVE it.
    When it comes to selling to our customers, we need to appeal to ALL of them, not just the ones with the same taste as ours. Customers LOVE new and different. Be the first to the table with new and unique items, and you’ll do well.
