White Flower Farm Celebrating Earth Day

White Flower Farm, a family-owned nursery in Litchfield, Conn., is celebrating Earth Day this year by focusing on native plants and educating consumers about them.

White Flower Farm offers many native plants and shrubs, including butterly larva food plants like asclepias, aster, aristolochia and baptisia. Among the best perennials to provide nectar for adult butterflies are asclepias, echinacea, eupatorium, heliopsis, liatris, monarda and rudbeckia.

My wife and I bought as many plants as we could fit into our minivan. Using crates to create a stacking effect we filled it to the brim. That afternoon we planted around 100 plants. The next night there was a sudden coldsnap. After covering our 800 sq ft garden with newspaper, tarps and anything else we could find we managed to protect 98% of the plants. They helped us select just the right inventories for the “english garden” at our 1820 stone farmhouse that we were not going to let anything happen to our new White Flower Farm garden. That was over 10 years ago, and the new owners of the home are thrilled we made the effort to save the plants! So were we.
