Three Named To AFE Board
March 26, 2008 The American Floral Endowment (AFE), a leading non-profit source for floriculture research and educational programs in the United States, has elected Dwight Larimer, Robert Maddux and Eric Nissen to serve three-year terms on its board of trustees.
Larimer, president of Design Master in Boulder, Colo. since 1991, has more than 30 years of experience in the floral industry. He has served on the Society of American Florists (SAF) Board of Directors and the Wholesale Florist & Florist Supplier Association Board of Directors.
Maddux opened his first garden center 47 years ago and is now president and owner of Krueger-Maddux Greenhouses in Cincinnati. He’s currently president of the Cincinnati Flower Gardens Association, and he’s served as president and board member of the Ohio Florist Association.
Nissen is a past SAF board member who’s served as a panelist at several SAF conventions. He’s a member of the Florida Nursery and the Growers & Landscape Association (FNGLA).
Additionally, AFE awarded 19 scholarships in 2007 to eligible horticulture students pursuing careers in a horticulture-related field.
Scholarships were provided in cash and ranged from $500 to $2,000 with checks issued jointly in the name of the recipient and the college or institution the recipient attended in the fall.
More scholarships will be offered again this year. Interested students can download applications at www.endowment.org or www.collegetoolkit.com.
To be considered for a scholarship, students must be citizens or residents of the U.S. or Canada, or be enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the U.S. or Canada. Students also have to be pursuing a career in a horticulture-related field and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students with lower grade point averages might be considered if they have other outstanding qualifications or extenuating circumstances.
The application deadline is May 1, and scholarship decisions will be made this August. Recipients will be notified by U.S. mail.
