A Day At Green Circle Growers

A Day At Green Circle Growers

Members of the Greater Cleveland Flower Growers Association (GCFGA) gathered Tuesday for tours of Green Circle Growers in Oberlin, Ohio.

One of the newest additions to Green Circle is its orchid range, which was created within the last year and spans 6 acres. Orchids fill benches in three separate sections, including a cooling house to finish. Green Circle is maximizing space in the entire range by beginning orchid production in cups, as seen in the photo to the right.

Beyond the orchid cooling house at Green Circle is a conveniently located staging area for potting them. Makes more sense than carting them halfway across the facility, right? And just beyond the staging area is the operation’s state-of-the-art wood burner.

Five new European wood burners are, however, in Green Circle’s future plans. The operation intends to build a facility near its current wood burner for the purpose of housing its new burners.

Other impressive aspects of Green Circle were ebb-and-flood benches, countless irrigation booms and its research-and-development area.

As part of the event, GCFGA members heard from Gary Wolf, a safety inspector with the Ohio Department of Transportation, who offered details about what tractor trailer drivers should look for on their daily walk-around.

Not surprisingly, springs are the cause of many tractor trailer violations Wolf finds. Broken springs will drop the frame of the trailer directly onto the tires, so your drivers should check springs before and after every drive–if they’re not already doing so. In Ohio, 25 troopers do daily tractor trailer inspections, in addition to 65 other federal employees who inspect trucks all day long.

Greenhouse Grower Editor Delilah Onofrey also presented, sharing details of our recent Industry Pulse survey and her visit to California Pack Trials.
