Dallas G. Johnson, the founder of Dallas Johnson Greenhouses in Glenwood, IA, passed away on January 7 at the age of 78.

Johnson was born on November 2, 1938, in Rapid City, SD, to Howard and Jessie (Roethler) Johnson. He graduated from Brandon High School in 1957, where he was an All-State football player.

Johnson married Kay Schulz on May 5, 1962.

In 1985, he opened Dallas Johnson Greenhouses, and rapidly expanded the business over the years since, growing it to become No. 23 on Greenhouse Grower’s Top 100 Growers list. Today, the operation includes two wholesale production facilities with 2,600,000 square feet, or 61 acres, of indoor growing space.

Dallas Johnson Greenhouses specializes in bedding plants, annuals, hardy perennials, mums, poinsettias, and Easter lilies. It distributes to customers in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Under the direction of Dallas Johnson’s son, President and CEO Todd Johnson, the operation continues to expand and grow its customer reach every year.

Johnson is survived by his wife, Kay; son, Todd (Kymm); daughter, Shannon Willadsen (Kent), all of Council Bluffs, IA; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild; brother, Russell Johnson (Susan) of Red Oak, IA; sister, Maxine Woods (Marty) of Glenwood, IA; brother-in-law, George Schulze (Marlene); numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and family dog, Molly. He is preceded in death by daughter Shawn Sorenson-Peters.
