Metrolina Planning Major Expansion

Metrolina Greenhouses has asked the town of Huntersville, N.C., to rezone about 110 acres to allow construction of greenhouses, The Charlotte Observer reports.

According to documents on file with the Huntersville Planning Department, Metrolina would like to expand by about 1.5 million square feet. Currently, Metrolina ranks sixth on Greenhouse Grower’s Top 100 Growers List with 5.4 million square feet of environmentally controlled greenhouse space.

President Abe Van Wingerden indicates he would like to complete the land granding by the end of next year and start construction in either 2011 or 2012. Metrolina, of course, is currently the largest single-site greenhouse operation in the United States.
