Wal-Mart Converting Garden Centers Into Sports Centers

Wal-Mart Converting Garden Centers Into Sports Centers

Hundreds of Wal-Mart garden centers will be converted to Game Time Headquarters over the next month, giving football fans plenty of space to purchase items for tailgating and gear of their local college and pro teams. Game Time Headquarters will occupy garden centers through September 30, giving Wal-Mart another productive use for its garden center spaces at a typically slower time of the year.

“With 36 million tailgaters in the U.S., the kickoff to football season is now one of our favorite all-American pastimes,” says Janet Bareis, vice president of Wal-Mart corporate marketing. “But we know our job on the team is to make sure tailgaters don’t spend a dime more than they need to–that’s why we’ve put together some winning prices all in one place in the store.”

Just think if Wal-Mart used its garden center spaces as Game Time Headquarters and as garden centers. Growers would obviously still benefit, and they could offer mums to be sold in local or regional team colors as the perfect cross-merchandising accent.

According to tailgating.com, 42 percent of tailgaters spend more than $500 each season on food and supplies. So why not incorporate mums and other items into the big picture?
