Poppelmann Now Offers Biodegradable Pots

Poppelmann, the German-based company with a manufacturing facility in North Carolina, has developed a new line of biodegradable TEKU pots that degrade completely within three to four months under large-scale composting conditions.

TEKU biodegradable pots are olive green in color and available in three different sizes–3.5 inches, 4.125 inches and 4.75 inches. Poppelmann’s goal from the start was to create a material mix for biodegradable pots that not only degrades well, but offers serviceability and does not influence plant quality.

Two of the materials that make up more than 80 percent of the raw material in the pots are starch and vegetable dextrose, both renewable materials. Co-polyester, the third material, is a fossil material that is 100 percent biodegradable.

The Quebec Institute for the Development of Ornamental Horticulture (IQDHO) is a center of expertise in ornamental horticulture located in Saint-Hyacinthe, Québec, Canada. We are essentially a team of specialists at the service of growers and all sectors of the ornamental horticulture industry in Québec. Recently we have had several enquiries concerning biodegradable plant containers. In order to address the concerns of our customers, we applied and obtained funding to evaluate various products offered on the market. Our assays will test several containers for the production of annual crops in a greenhouse environment. Another aspect of our study is to gather information on the various products currently available in order to help the producers select the most appropriate product for their needs. We are targeting our study to containers that can be used in production. Therefore we are excluding, at this point, decorative pots.

We understand that you distribute (produce) such products and we would be grateful if you could assist us by providing specific information about your product/s. We already have gathered various paper descriptions and information packages but often we can not find all the information we are looking for. You will find below a list of questions summarizing the information we are looking for. Would it be possible for you to fill in this questionnaire and return it to us via E-Mail . If you are not the appropriate person to provide us with this information, could you kindly forward our message to the appropriate person or provide us with their coordinates.

This is the information we are looking for;

Trademarks or commercial names of your products
Manufacturer’s name and geographic location
Name of distributors in Québec, Canada or the U.S.A (i.e, distributors that could be relevant to the Québec Market)
Pot composition and method of fabrication
Are the pots permeable to root growth? Yes or no
What are the sizes and shapes available? Are corresponding trays available?
Product costs

Biodegradation characteristics :

Can they decompose in a domestic compost heap?
Can they decompose in an industrial (high temperature) compost heap?
What factors contribute or are necessary for degradation (breaking, light, moisture, microorganism etc..)?
Can the pots be planted in soil directly by the consumer?

Storage and shelf life characteristics :

Can the containers be stored and for how long?
Are there any specific storage requirements to avoid degradation before use?
Can the containers be used more than once?
Are the pots resistant to mecanization such as mecanical filling?

Sincerely thank you for your collaboration, if you have any questions or wish to dicuss this further please do not hesitate to contact us.

With best regards,

Marie-Claude Lavoie, agr. for Louise O`Donoughue, Ph.D.
