NCSU Senior Earns Spring Meadow Nursery Scholarship

NCSU Senior Earns Spring Meadow Nursery Scholarship

The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI), the research affiliate of the American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA), has awarded the 2010 Spring Meadow Nursery Scholarship of $1,500 to Emily Silverman, a North Carolina State University senior.

Bright, well-trained and qualified people are essential to the nursery industry, which is the reason Dale and Liz Deppe of Spring Meadow Nursery initiated The Spring Meadow Scholarship Fund in 1999. The fund is dedicated to helping aspiring students from across the country obtain degrees in horticulture. It is also Spring Meadow’s way of giving back and sharing with others their passion for plants and the nursery industry.

Silverman’s professional goal is to be an ornamental plant breeder.

“Horticulture gave me new insight to the plant breeding world and expanded my focus to ornamentals, small fruit and vegetable crops,” she says.  “I want to help the world and contribute useful introductions through plant breeding.

“This scholarship will help me finish my undergraduate degree and it means that I can focus more on my classes and work fewer hours while I am in my last semesters. I greatly appreciate this scholarship. It means a lot to me.”
