Bob’s Market Named Operation Of The Year

Bob's Market Named Operation Of The Year

Bob’s Market and Greenhouses of Mason, W.V., was named Greenhouse Grower’s Operation of the Year during the Evening of Excellence reception Monday night in Columbus, Ohio. Bob’s Market was in the running for the award with Emerald Coast Growers, James Greenhouses and Rocket Farms.

Bob’s Market follows Metrolina Greenhouses (2010) and Lucas Greenhouses (2009) as recent Operation of the Year winners.

Selected as an Operation of the Year finalist for the second consecutive year, Bob’s Market is well known for producing some of the highest quality plugs in its region. In fact, Bob’s is among the top 10 plug and liner producers in the United States despite just 15 years of focus in that area.

Robert Barnitz and his wife, Corena, established Bob’s Market more than 40 years ago. All five of their sons chose greenhouse floriculture as their career paths, and all five have a stake in the business as owners.

Customer service is at the core of Bob’s Market, and Robert is especially proud of the fact Bob’s has never lost a customer due to poor product quality, delivery or a lack of business integrity. Building longstanding, personal relationships with customers that outlast Bob’s business relationships has always been a key to success, too, and being good stewards with the beautification of local communities is a role the Barnitz family regularly takes on.

6 Breeding Companies Serve Up New Varieties At Pacific Plug & Liner

Pacific Plug & Liner’s theme this year, Labyrinth, a conservatory of the world’s most captivating plants, was perfectly topped off (pun intended) with fascinators for the women and newsboy caps for the men. The PP&L team dressed their part to act out the gothic “conservatory of the world’s most captivating plants.” Truly, the displays looked like they practically popped out of a catalog, and the costumes were a nice touch. Retailers take heed, the fully merchandised displays at Pacific Plug & Liner are worthy of emulating. We’ll let the pictures tell the story of all the fabulous variety introductions presented at  Pacific Plug & Liner’s 2015 California Spring Trials, where Cultivaris, Cohen Nurseries, Histil Nurseries, Jaldety Nurseries, Southern Living/Sunset Collection and Pacific Plug & Liner all highlighted their 2016 introductions.

PittMoss Wins On Shark Tank

Mont Handley, president and CEO of PittMoss, appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank on April 17 to try to get the “sharks” to invest in his peat moss alternative. Three investors from the TV show contributed $600,000 to PittMoss for a 35 percent stake in the company. Check out this clip from ABC’s website in which Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary and Robert Herjavec discuss getting on board with the product. PittMoss is an alternative to sphagnum peat moss, made up of a mix of proprietary additives and recycled paper rescued from landfill space. Handley founded the Pittsburgh-based company in 1994. What started as a small experiment grew into a full-fledged business with the help of funding provided by an EPA SBIR grant and Pittsburgh’s Idea Foundry. Today, PittMoss is available to commercial greenhouses and nurseries from Michigan to Maine to North Carolina, with plans to grow. Operation Of The Year, The Perennial Farm: Putting Cust…

Rick Watson, owner of The Perennial Farm in Glen Arm, Md., has a simple goal. “I want to make sure our customers have all the plants they need when they need them,â€  he says. “That sounds like a very simple goal, but it’s a challenging one.â€ Challenging indeed. With that objective in mind, Watson has built a business that spans more than 50 acres of highly efficient greenhouses and outdoor production, growing more than 1,000 varieties of perennials, ferns, grasses, groundcovers and flowering vines. A fleet of 16 trucks delivers to customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, and a staff of 75 employees pot, maintain, sell plants and track orders. After Fowler’s death in 1998, Watson made the difficult decision to close the landscaping division and change the name of the nursery division to The Perennial Farm. It is still a family business — Watson’s wife, Gail, does the […]

Head Grower Of The Year Dennis Crum: The Grower’s…

Dennis Crum values relationships. It’s a trait that has served him well over the years and it defines his career. And it’s those relationships that have stood the test of time and remain important after the excitement of the day and after the applause dies down. This was illustrated perfectly at Greenhouse Grower’s Evening of Excellence reception at OFA Short Course. The ballroom was abuzz with excitement, as 17 companies and individuals were nominated for awards at the prestigious ceremony, including four finalists for the 2013 Head Grower of the Year Award, sponsored by BASF. When Crum, the director of growing operations at Four Star Greenhouse in Carleton, Mich., was announced as the winner, the room erupted with applause and cheers from his many supporters. Crum accepted his award with humility. Through jokes and a few tears, he thanked owners Tom and Sharon Smith and his team at Four Star […]
