Now Accepting Grower Of The Year Nominations

In 2010, Greenhouse Grower took its longtime Grower of the Year award to new heights. We introduced a new Grower of the Year program, which encompasses two distinct awards: Operation of the Year and Head Grower of the Year.

Metrolina Greenhouses and Regina Coronado of Stacy’s Greenhouses, of course, were respectively named Operation of the Year and Head Grower of the Year in 2010. But long before Metrolina and Coronado were recognized for their hard work at July’s OFA Short Course, they were nominated for their respective awards by industry colleagues.

The nomination process is again in effect for the 2011 Grower of the Year awards, and you can nominate an operation or head grower you deem worthy through Friday, Feb. 25. There is no limit on the number of nominations you can make.

For Operation of the Year, Greenhouse Grower is looking for operations that exemplify modern, high-quality production practices, demonstrate innovative marketing, are strong on customer service, embrace technology and demonstrate community and industry leadership.

Likewise, for Head Grower of the Year, nominees will be whittled down to head growers who exemplify modern, high-quality production practices, embrace technology and innovation, lead, motivate and mentor others on staff, make valuable contributions to the operation’s management team and are actively engaged in the industry.

Once the nomination period has passed, panels will choose one recipient for each respective award. This year’s Operation of the Year panel includes leaders from Greenhouse Grower’s last two Operations of the Year – Abe Van Wingerden of Metrolina and George Lucas of Lucas Greenhouses – as well as Greenhouse Grower Editor Delilah Onofrey and Steve Larson, the national ornamentals accounts manager at BASF.

The Head Grower of the Year panel also includes Onofrey and Larson. Coronado, as the Head Grower of the Year, will serve on the panel over the next two years.
