Basket-Worthy Beauties

Check out this array of jaw-dropping new varieties for stunning hanging baskets and containers.

Ball FloraPlant
Free-flowering and early-blooming under short days, Cabaret calibrachoa has a higher pH tolerance, so the foliage stays dark green longer. In addition to ‘Cabaret Peach,’ also new for 2008 are ‘Yellow Glow’ and ‘Purple Glow.’ They grow 6 to 10 inches tall with a spread of 8 to 12 inches and require full sun.

‘Abunda Colossal Sky Blue’ joins the Abunda series for 2008. This new variety produces extremely large flowers for high impact. The big, beautiful blooms are set off by the dark green foliage. They reach a height of 8 to 12 inches and spread 8 to 12 inches in full sun.

‘Happy Hour Rose’ morning glory features abundant, pretty rose-red flowers, each with a white throat, over variegated foliage. Plants climb 6 to 9 feet and flowering starts when the vine reaches 3 feet.

‘Titan Pure White’ vinca is very early-flowering and vigorous, with better disease and stress tolerance than open-pollinated varieties. Titans bloom up to two weeks faster, producing a very large, well-branched plant. ‘Titan Pure White’ is the first pure white F1 vinca, with very large flowers and no pink center ring.

‘Blanket Zinfandel’ petunias feature nickel-sized, deep wine flowers by the hundreds. Vigorous in habit, Blankets will effortlessly trail, creating premium hanging basket combinations.

Cathedrals are the new generation in Farinaceous salvia. Vegetatively propagated, they are more stout in habit, have considerably larger inflorescences and bloom continuously. ‘Sky Blue’ features gorgeous, light blue flowers.

Scopia ‘Gulliver Blue Sensation’ features masses of giant, light blue flowers covering the compact, well-branched plant. ‘Gulliver Blue Sensation’ has a mounded-trailing growth habit.

Scopia ‘Great Regal Blue’ offers large, deep blue flowers that are gracefully borne above the dark green foliage. ‘Great Regal Blue’ is floriferous, branched and compact with a mounded-trailing growth habit.

Dümmen USA
The Confetti Garden Liner is one 40mm Ellepot with two or three color-coordinated cultivars, pre-cultured and grown together. The combinations were selected for timing, habit and striking color appeal. They include verbena, petunias and Dümmen’s new calibrachoa. Paul Ecke Ranch
Ecke Geraniums, Oglevee Products ‘Maestro White’ is one of the newest introductions in this mid-sized range of zonal geraniums. The plant habit and height of this series make it possible to use in pots, combinations and baskets effectively without over-growing the container. White is a great color to use for contrast against either pastel shades or bold colors.

Velocity is a new series of vegetatively produced viola with mounded plant habit. The heat- and full sun-tolerance of these new viola keep them flowering from spring to fall. Available in five colors from pastel to bold, this series is in its first year of release and will be in limited quantities this year.

‘Summer Idols Pink’ is a zonal pelargonium with dark leaves and a clear zone. This vigorous variety has strong salmon-colored flowers and can be used in baskets or combination plantings with other trailing or upright varieties.

‘Dancing Idols White’ is a double-flowered trailing geranium with strong, dark leaves. It is a well-branched plant and its well-filled flowers offer plenty of color impact. It is easy to handle because of the compact habit in the beginning of the growing period, but it fits perfectly in hanging baskets or combinations because of its trailing aspects.

Garden Splendor
Campanula poscharskyana ‘Blue Waterfall’ features deep blue, bell-shaped flowers with a dainty white center that cover this mat-forming creeper in June. Reaching a mature size of 9 inches tall by 24 inches in spread, it grows in sun to partial shade, hardy to Zone 4.

Lychnis ‘Rolly’s Favorite’ is an incredibly floriferous perennial smothered in soft pink flowers with white centers from late spring to summer. Bushy, compact and freely branching, each stem produces multiple buds and flowers for a constant succession of bloom. Hardy to Zone 4, it grows best in sun to partial shade and reaches 15 inches high by 12 inches wide.

Novalis
Begonia ‘Gumdrop Cherry Blossom,’ part of the Plants That Work by Color line, is a new form of an old favorite that features soft, fully double flowers in soft pink. Cherry Blossom flowers profusely all summer long and is as tough as it is durable. Reaching 12 by 18 inches, plant in sun to part shade.

Osteospermum ‘Doris Daisy Pillow Talk’ is a classy new variety with large, pure-white flowers with purple eyes. While Pillow Talk might go out of flower in extreme heat, it will bounce right back once it cools down. Ideal for full sun, it reaches 10 by 22 inches and is hardy to Zone 9.
