Hanging Baskets & Combos:

Basket-Worthy Beauties

Check out this array of jaw-dropping new varieties for stunning hanging baskets and containers.

PanAmerican Seed
The Shock Wave F1 small-flowered petunia series is all-new for 2008. Available in five colors and two mixes, Shock Wave varieties last longer and look fresher at retail. The flower power is phenomenal: masses of petite blooms offer exceptional bounce-back from rain or overhead watering. Shock Wave petunias are perfect for baskets, containers and combos, with a height of 7 to 10 inches and spreading 2½ to 3 feet in full sun.

‘Easy Wave Mystic Pink’ is a new addition to the F1 spreading petunia series. Large flowers in a unique, psychedelic soft to mid pink and white pattern are highlighted by a splash of color that ranges from morn to star.

Proven Winners
This spring, Proven Winners will expand the Superbells color palette with seven new introductions. ‘Apricot Punch,’ which is an independent garden center exclusive this year, is one of the smallest, most compact growers in the series, with golden apricot flowers with a distinctive dark eye, creating a strong bicolor effect.

Catalina torenia is a perfect choice for areas that will get quite a bit of shade throughout the day. These plants are quite heat-tolerant and offer dazzling white throats and oversized blooms. It will do well in partial to full shade, on its own in a container or against a background of silver or lime-green foliage plants.

Sahin
The viola Four Seasons series is the first viola F1 series especially bred for hanging baskets with a great, mounding habit. Four Seasons F1 won several awards, including the University of Florida field trials, thanks to its long-lasting flowering time.
Begonia x tuberhybrida ‘Show Angels Formula Mixture F1’ offers a great mounding habit with a mixture of F1 varieties.

Sakata
‘Profusion Double Cherry’ is the first double petal flower form for the series. As with the full Profusion series, this variety is tolerant of heat and high humidity, having fewer disease problems than other zinnias. Cherry red color makes it an ideal focus plant in mixed containers, as well, from spring through fall frosts.

SuperNova primula presents flowers on sturdy stems well above the plant foliage, making this new variety an excellent choice for mixed containers. ‘SuperNova Fire’ presents a center of golden yellow blending to fire red on the outside edge of each bloom.

Selecta First Class
‘Magadi Light Blue’ is a great new lobelia, the first interspecific type that shows colors all over the plant without the typical more open look of those types. Magadi loves the heat and performs great in the summer, giving the color expression of traditional lobelias. Its habit is ball-shaped all summer long and has bright, light blue flowers.

Bidens ferulifolia ‘Namid’ is also new for 2008 season. Yellow is an important color, and ‘Namid’ adds a new yellow choice to the Selecta program. It is a medium vigorous variety with a well-branched habit. It has large, golden-yellow flowers and dark green foliage. ‘Namid’ flowers early and performs great for the consumer.

STEPABLES
Fragaria ‘Lipstick’ has dark green, oval leaves that are the ideal backdrop for deep, rich pink flowers. ‘Lipstick’ puts on quite a show from late spring to early fall until the flowers eventually give way to small, tasty red strawberries. It reaches 4 to 12 inches tall at maturity and is hardy to Zone 4.

Gypsophila ‘Rosea’ features grey-green, thin, elongated foliage that stays low and is covered in small, pink flowers in late spring. ‘Rosea’ attracts butterflies and reaches 4 to 8 inches in height. Hardy to Zone 3.

Syngenta Flowers, Inc.
‘StrawBurst’ bracteantha has vibrant, extra-large yellow blooms with great curb appeal. ‘StrawBurst’ will last through the summer heat as well as into the cool fall days.
With large, eight-petal, golden-yellow flowers, ‘Mexican Gold’ bidens provides an abundance of color throughout the garden. It is an outstanding component plant for combination planters and mixed baskets.

Terra Nova Nurseries
Campanula ‘Pink Octopus’ features Japanese lantern buds that open to striking, pink octopus-like flowers. These weep down from the upright flowering branches above strong, deeply cut foliage. This plant is easy to grow and has a long bloom time. Hardy to Zones 5 to 9.
