Color Spectacular
Breeders gearing up for California Pack Trials give growers a sneak peek into new color options for spring 2009.
Ball Horticultural Co.
Allure geraniums deliver consistent color every time, featuring true uniformity and vigor across all colors. The upright plants have high stress tolerance and keep their large, semi-double blooms all season in large containers and landscapes. New for 2009 is ‘Allure Picotee Pink,’ with eye-catching, elegant white petals and subtle pink trim.
Available exclusively from Ball, ‘Denver Daisy’ rudbeckia is a big-bloomed newcomer that creates awesome landscapes and containers alike. Eye-catching, bicolor, 6- to 8-inch blooms adorn the well-branched plants. Selected by the City and County of Denver to commemorate their 150th anniversary in 2008.
Benary
The ‘Kaleidoscope’ Pentas series is a taller landscape series that provides bountiful color even in the hottest conditions. Benary adds two new attractive colors to the Kaleidoscope series: Pink and Deep Rose, which combine well together.
The new Ptilotus ‘Joey’ is truly a breeding breakthrough. A native to central Australia, Ptilotus offers exceptional beauty, and the side benefit of heat and drought tolerance. Large, conical spikes of feathery flowers top thick silver green foliage. The 3- to 4-inch bottlebrush flower spikes are glistening silver with darker neon pink tips.
Bodger Seed
Introduced as a mix last year, the Distance zinnia series is now broken out into seven individual colors. Very well-branched and floriferous, they produce semi- to fully double flowers. All Distance zinnias will reach 12-18” in the garden and are great for 4” pots.
Hero French marigolds have been a workhorse of the industry for years. Their uniformity in habit, time to bloom, and flower size are predictable. For 2008-09, Orange Bee joins this series. It presents large, orange flowers with red highlights.
Goldsmith Seeds
Tigereye is the first and only F1 hybrid rudbeckia series, which means never-before-seen uniformity on the bench and strength in the garden. It has an excellent PGR response and the nicely branched plants are covered with long-lasting flowers. Offering reduced sensitivity to powdery mildew, Tigereye is a high-value premium product.
The Cora vinca series offers two new colors: Punch and Pink. With atented resistance to aerial Phytophthora and F1 hybrid vigor, its consistently high seedling stands mean no double sowing. Cora vincas offer uniform habit and flowering time, large flowers and thick, glossy foliage.
