Farwest Show 2017 Will Feature New Days and Hours

Farwest Show FloorThe Oregon Association of Nurseries, which organizes the Farwest Show in Portland, OR, have announced that, in response to suggestions from attendees and visitors of the 2016 show, the 2017 event will feature new days and times.

Farwest 2017 will take place Wednesday, Aug. 23 through Friday, Aug. 25. Show Expo hours will be 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Friday.

“As we enter our 45th year, our mission continues to be making Farwest the most relevant show in our industry,” says Allan Niemi, Director of Events with the Oregon Association of Nurseries. “These schedule changes are in direct response to input and feedback from the most important people associated with The Farwest Show — our attendees and exhibitors.”

Farwest 2017 will take place entirely in the work week. Days and hours for the exhibit hall have been adjusted to better suit today’s busy schedules. The Show will now open later to give exhibitors more morning time for meetings, seminars, or nursery tours. Thursday offers a full day of floor hours. Friday hours are abbreviated to allow time for afternoon nursery tours, post-show meetings with exhibitors, or travel home in time for the weekend.

The Oregon Association of Nurseries believes the new weekdays and hours will enhance the overall experience for exhibitors and attendees with more opportunities for networking, education, and touring. Additionally, ending the show on Friday instead of Saturday opens up possibilities for longer stays with more time for work or recreation in nursery country and the Portland area. With the combination of the Wednesday to Friday show days and opening at a later hour on the first day, attendees and exhibitors will have more flexibility for self-guided tours at the 600+ Oregon nurseries at the front and back end of the show. In addition, with a noon first-day opening, morning education seminars will not overlap show floor hours.

Complete details on Farwest 2017 will be posted at FarwestShow.com in the coming weeks and months. For more information, contact Allan Niemi, Director of Events, at 503-582-2005 and [email protected].

Technology Is Changing the Game for Growers

Technology is sexy. There’s a fervor associated with buying the latest go-go-gadget — and a fear of missing out if we don’t. We all want that latest, most advanced smartphone, home assistant, or wearable tech, no matter the cost. And jobs associated with technology? Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter — offer some of the most competitive and coveted positions on the planet. Just look at the stir Amazon made when it announced it would build a $50 billion second headquarters, with cities from all over North America clamoring to be the one chosen, considering the significant economic potential. Technology and tech jobs are it — and it’s no wonder growers don’t feel jobs in horticulture can compete. But what if they can? If tech jobs are the future and the future of horticulture depends on technology, then we have a real opportunity to seize. Millennials who have grown up […]
