Hoffman Nursery Cheers On the Next Generation of Horticulturists

National Collegiate Landscape CompetitionMore than 800 horticulture and landscape students converged on the Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, campus for the 41st National Collegiate Landscape Competition (NCLC) held March 15-18. John and Jill Hoffman, owners of Hoffman Nursery in Rougemont, NC, were there to support and encourage them as they competed in real-world events such as annual and perennial plant identification, arboriculture techniques, landscape installation, and more.

Hoffman Nursery sponsored the annual and perennial identification portion of the competition. John Hoffman instructed the students on rules and procedures beforehand and fielded questions. Hoffman Nursery also worked closely with Olson’s Greenhouse in Salem, UT, the company that provided plants for the event. Brett Zylstra from Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture placed first in this year’s competition.

Hoffman Nursery has been involved with the NCLC for several years, serving as a sponsor and champion of students entering the competition. In addition to the competitive events, the NCLC is a premier networking event for students, with a career fair that offers several opportunities for companies in the green industry to meet and recruit the next-generation of horticulturists.
