Missouri Greenhouse Grower John Tomasovic Dies

John L. Tomasovic Sr.

John L. Tomasovic, Sr., 83, died January 11, 2018. The patriarch of Tomasovic Greenhouses & Nursery, Inc. in Des Peres, MO, was a legend in the plant industry. His operation was the oldest business in Des Peres, MO, formerly known as John L. Tomasovic Florist, Inc.

Tomasovic was widely involved in the floriculture industry, serving as a past president of the Missouri State Florist Association, the Allied Florists of Greater St. Louis, the St. Louis Flower Growers Association, and the Bedding Plant Foundation. He was a past council member of the Society of American Florists and member of the American Academy of Florists, and Bedding Plants, Inc. Tomasovic has a scholarship in his name through the American Floral Endowment.

According to his son, Tomasovic reviewed each of the scholarship applications personally, and took great care to select a student he felt could use a little extra help, not necessarily always the highest performer.

“Jack was a man of integrity, generous with his time and resources,” says Marvin Miller of Ball Horticultural Co. “He loved the greenhouse industry and was very involved.”

Outside of horticulture, Tomasovic was a past president of the local optimist club, a lifetime member of the World Bird Sanctuary, a past alderman of the City of Des Peres, and past board member of the Forest Hill Country Club, and involved locally for several years. Tomasovic was also a shareholder of the Green Bay Packers.

He was married for 62 years to Priscilla (Pep) Tomasovic and father of John L. Tomasovic, Jr. (Beth), and Susan Tomasovic McClellan. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Tomasovic requested a private service with family; however, contributions in his memory can be made to: The World Bird Sanctuary, 125 Bald Eagle Ridge Road, Valley Park, MO; or to the John L. Tomasovic, Sr. Scholarship Fund, American Floral Endowment, 1001 North Fairfax Street, Suite 201, Alexandria, VA 22314. Flowers could be sent to Mrs. Pep Tomasovic and family at 1251 Meier Lane, Des Peres, MO 63131.

Raker-Roberta’s Young Plants Debuts as Roberta’s Finali…

On December 1, Eric Wallien of Roberta’s Inc. in Waldron, IN, officially purchased C. Raker & Sons in Litchfield, MI. The new identity of the company is now Raker-Roberta’s Young Plants, according to a Dec. 1 letter to Raker’s customers, suppliers, and business partners from Vice President Susie Raker-Zimmerman. “There have been minimal changes in management and we will be providing the same products and services on which we have built our reputation in the industry,” Raker-Zimmerman said in the letter, which also announced the name change and new logo. The sale of C. Raker & Sons was announced in September . A series of events affecting Raker’s financial situation caused the need for the operation to find an alternate solution. Roberta’s had been a customer of Raker’s since 2011, and the fourth generation, family owned grower-retailer was a fan of Raker’s commitment to quality. The agreement to purchase C. […]
