This trellis structure was temporarily replaced with a narrow building that became the original gift shop. That building was replaced by today's larger building, which houses the gift shop Wild Thistle.

“I tend to be very conservative, but if you wait too long, it can hurt you,” he says.

It took fellow garden retailers in his GAP Group and creating a solid business plan with his consultant before he committed to the project. (The GAP Group is made up of garden retailers from across the U.S. who work together to improve their businesses under the guidance of Ian Baldwin.)
