Signs With Benefits: How Signage Can Sell Your Products And Your Store
Most signs in a garden center are hard workers. They name plants, give directions and reveal prices. But signs can also be more social, telling customers about how they’ll benefit from your store and your plants. They can also simply make people smile, giving them something to remember you by. Here are several such signs the staff at Greenhouse Grower RETAILING has spied over the past year to inspire you.

Gardening burns calories!
Costa Farms posted signs that spell out the benefits of gardening in simple language through out its trials in early 2015. On each of these signs, Costa includes the source of the information at the lower left corner. This lets customers know that you aren't making these kind of quotes up.

Plants increase focus
I love this display from TPIE. The black board in the background lists the benefits. Between the school-like setting and the largest-written benefit being "plant increase focus," this display appeals to parents and anyone concerned about childhood development. It takes plants from decorative to a necessity.

In this sign spotted at Benary's during 2015 California Spring Trials, a quote from Buddha adds a sense of wonder to how beautifully constructed plants are.

Boost the mood in your store.
Not all signs need to sell benefits directly. They can be implied by the mood you set. These signs are both warm and at times humorous. That's a great theme for a garden shopping experience.

Be on trend
HGTV Home Plants does a great job of identifying consumer trends, then showing how consumers can use plants to be on trend. This particular display is actually targeting our industry, since it was on view for California Spring Trials. But it can be easily adapted for your own store.ncern.

Reflect Customers Back To Them
Like the HGTV display, these signs at Darwin Perennial days are aimed at the industry. But they do show what each demographic group likes. This can be easily changed to suggestions of projects and plant they'd like, using key words that address their concerns. For example, in a sign portraying young parents, you could emphasize "easy" and "quick" ideas, since time is a big concern.

A bench sign with more than just price
Most of the time, when you see a bench sign like this one, it names the plants for sale and the price. Name, rank and serial number. This sign, spotted during the Ball Horticulture stop during California Spring Trials, tells customers why this plant would work in their yard.
