Sunshine Farm & Gardens, a 46-year-old, 60-acre plant nursery, garden center, and arboretum located in Greenbrier County, WV, recently concluded negotiations with Tam & Associates, a Beijing, China firm, to provide landscape material for several locations in China.

The nursery will be shipping plants bred and grown in West Virginia to China that will be used in the landscape of several Olympic venues in the February 2022 Winter Olympics, and also for another commercial project in Liaoning Province. The plants will be shipped to China this winter and grown to maturity at several different Chinese nurseries.

Sunshine Farm & Gardens has exported West Virginia-grown plants to almost every country in the world, according to Barry Glick, President and Founder of the company.

“In light of (West Virginia) Governor Jim Justice’s comments regarding the trade imbalance with China, we are proud to be doing our part in reducing that deficit,” Glick says.

Sunshine Farm & Gardens hosted a group of Chinese nurserymen and horticulturists, sponsored by the West Virginia Nursery & Landscape Association, in 2012. The delegation spent the morning touring the gardens and were then treated to a luncheon and a tour of The Greenbrier grounds. It was that visit that led to the current project, Glick says.

Plants for export require inspection by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, which then issues a phytosanitary certificate to coincide with the importing country’s import certificate. All plants exported must be free of soil and pass stringent requirements.
