Peat Moss Supplies Look To Be Down In 2016

Peat Bog - La Grande River RegionThe Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association (CSPMA), whose members represent 95% of North American peat production, recently provided a harvest update for the 2016 season.

A survey of members was conducted on August 31 on the status of their 2016 actual harvest as a percentage of their 2016 expected harvest. Overall, members say the season has been disappointing, with no peatland harvest region achieving expected harvest volumes.

In New Brunswick, the industry is slightly below average in its expected harvest volumes. (New Brunswick North, 93%, New Brunswick South, 76%). A wet, cool summer restricted harvesting in some areas.

The harvest on Québec’s South Shore (89%) also is below expectations. However, some producers were able to achieve targeted volumes. In Québec’s North Shore (75%) the results are less favorable, with no producer achieving their harvest expectations. Unfavorable weather conditions throughout the harvest period presented major challenges.

The Prairie Provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta) experienced a poorer harvest primarily due to adverse weather. Manitoba was at 83%, Saskatchewan at 70%, and Alberta at 79%.

In the U.S., Minnesota has experienced a similarly lower than expected harvest, with only 84% achieved.

Further adjustments to this update may be necessary, according to CSPMA, depending on the ability to harvest in the fall season. The industry had lower carryover inventory volumes from the previous harvest season.

As in the past, CSPMA says its members are committed to working cooperatively with their commercial business partners.
