Pest & Disease Control Focus Of New England Conference
September 22, 2008 Keeping up with pesticide recertification is a must for growers, and this November’s New England Greenhouse Conference will give them the opportunity to earn credits needed for recertification while learning valuable and new information on various aspects of pest and disease management over a three-day period.
A total of 17 hours of qualified programming from some of the top experts in the United States and Canada will be presented over the three days of the conference. Nora Catlin and Dan Gilrein, both of Cornell University, will speak on disease management for greenhouse propagation and IPM for greenhouse propagation on November 5. They’ll speak as part of the special advanced plant propagation symposium.
Carol Glenister of IPM Laboratories will cover pest control for the green grower that day as part of the growing green program. The featured pest-control program for November 5 will be the advanced bio-control workshop. Raymond Cloyd of Kansas State University will cover the ins & outs of successfully using biological control agents.
Margery Daughtrey of Cornell will discuss bio-control options for managing foliar diseases, and Wade Elmer of Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station will discuss bio-control options for managing root-rot diseases. Cloyd will close the symposium by talking about the latest developments in pest management using organic products.
The following day, November 6, will feature a day-long track on pest and disease control. Sharon Douglas of Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station will talk about powdery and downy mildews on greenhouse crops, and Gary Moorman of Penn State University follows with a session on managing root rot diseases.
In the afternoon, Gilrein will talk about pest control products and strategies. He’ll specifically discuss what’s working and what’s not in the industry. Graeme Murphy of Ontario will follow with a session on using banker plants in a bio-control program, and Maine grower Scott Longfellow will talk about his experiences with bio-controls.
