Baskets That Hang Around

Baskets That Hang Around

Eckert’s Greenhouse in Sterling Heights, Mich., is introducing the new 14-inch Weekender, a hanging basket with unique technology. The Weekender provides customers with two great features − a 1-gallon water reservoir and a removable liner, a first in the industry.

The revolutionary new basket requires 50 percent less watering than the traditional hanging basket. The Weekender is a 10-year guaranteed hanging basket made of polypropylene plastic, and Eckert’s believes it will stand the test of time for growers. There’s no need to toss or recycle the Weekender every year, as with traditional hanging baskets. It can keep coming back to the greenhouse year after year, either to be custom planted or switched out for a planted liner.

Greenhouses and garden centers also win when customers bring liners to be replanted, thus retaining their customer base. Consumers win by having a beautiful basket that doesn’t need to be watered daily. Plus, it’s a great way to reduce one’s carbon footprint. In Southern states where seasons are longer, two to three changes of the liner are possible.

The Weekender is a two-piece hanging basket. The first piece is the outside shell made from 0.125-inch polypropylene and is available in five different colors. The outside shell accommodates the overflow protection hole − overwatering will never occur − and includes a drain plug in the bottom when draining the entire pot is needed.

The second piece is the removable liner. This 0.90-inch polypropylene comes in black only and is 6.3 inches deep. Holes on the bottom of the liner allow plant roots to seek water by going through the holes in the root screen. Roots only need to travel about 0.125 inches before hitting water in the reservoir.

Eckert’s Greenhouse also offers the H2O Labor Saver, which sports the same principle as its smaller partner. The H2O Labor Saver, however, is for cities, parking lots and other locations where shock and awe is needed. Measuring 22 inches across with 2.46 gallons of reservoir water, it will exceed a grower’s needs. Growers can water twice a week and have beautiful growth all season long.

At this time of year, pots look beautiful with winter greens. With labor savings, pots will pay for themselves in one season. And again, Southern climates may achieve two to three crops easily with help from the removable liner system. At 0.25 inches thick and made of high molecular weight polyethylene, this pot has a 10-year warranty. It’s available in black and, new for 2010, in sand. It’s also available with a chain or swivel wire hanger .
