Orange benches with matching orange suns indicate to customers which plants are best for sun, while blue benches with matching blue clouds overhead show which plants like the shade.

Benching displays can be expensive, but they don’t always have to be. My Garden Nursery in Bellingham, WA, has found some creative and inventive ways to improve its displays to help its customers shop wisely, while the grower-retailer saves money on new tables and benches by instead using reclaimed and recycled materials, and paint to freshen everything up.

A featured pallet wall replaces benches in My Garden Nursery’s organic herb and veggie area, and in its tropical indoor plant area.

“We use orange for plants that like sun and blue for plants that like shade,” Gunderson says. “We have matching orange suns and blue clouds that hang over the tables.”

This provides a simple and easy way for customers to discern which plants they need for the areas of their gardens or patios that are exposed to different light conditions, without having to ask.

In the operation’s organic herb and veggie area, and in its tropical indoor plant area, My Garden Nursery adds a functional but stylish touch with its featured pallet wall.

“We use natural tables and even old weathered pallets (to display plants),” Gunderson says. “We cannot often afford new tables, so we slap new paint on them and they look shiny new.”
