Summerwinds Proven Winners display FEATUREThe numbers of retailers participating in Proven Winners’ Certified Training Program is on the rise, and the company has recently released new bonus material for the 2017 program.

Understanding the challenges of training new and seasonal staff at independent garden centers, Proven Winners says it is working to equip managers with tools to prepare their employees to better handle customers’ questions and boost their confidence in selling plants this season.

In the spring of 2016, a total of 5,979 retail garden center employees at 852 locations completed the Proven Winners Certified Training Program, an increase of 32% additional certified employees over the previous year. Changes to the program for 2017, which include a shorter video, a group training module, and the addition of Proven Winners University content, are expected to boost participation even higher this year. Proven Winners will again host a free pizza party for every garden center who completes certification by May 1.

Proven Winners University was created after listening to certified retailers who requested additional video content they could use to further train their employees on key topics. A series of two- to five-minute videos will be available this year on 16 trending topics such as plants for pollinators and deer resistance. Cultural information like watering and pruning, and how to set up a Proven Winners destination in a retail setting, are also included.

Detailed recommendations for new Proven Winners annuals, perennials, and flowering shrubs will be covered in the certified training video again this year to familiarize retail employees with these new products. The three national recipes for 2017 and plants of the year are covered as well. Online training begins February 1. Training DVDs are available upon request.
