Terrain’s Parent Company Breaks Impass For Waterloo Gardens Project

Urban Outfitters LogoThere’s been a development in the stalled plans for a new Terrain garden store from Urban Outfitters on the former Waterloo Gardens location.

In a letter to Easton Township, PA, officials, Urban Outfitters’ Chief Development Officer J. David Ziel says the company is removing a key element that had met strong resistance from the community around Devon Yards, its term for the development plan on the former Waterloo Gardens site.

Devon Yards will no longer include a four-story apartment building in its “lifestyle center” project, Ziel wrote. But it will still include its third Terrain store, a large format Anthropologie, and several eateries.

The planned apartment building had created friction with local residents, Mainline Media News reported back in April. While residents welcomed the retail aspects of the plan, they felt a large apartment building would change the character of the community.

The developer who will work on the project, Eli Kohn, told Mainline Media News he hopes to start work on the site in 2017.

Waterloo Gardens, one of the top garden centers in the country for more than 70 years, closed in 2012. Urban Outfitters opened its first Terrain garden store at the former Styers location in Glen Mills, PA, in 2008, and its second location in Westport, CT, in 2012. This year it is opening two California locations: The Walnut Creek, CA, location opened earlier this year, and the Palo Alto location will open in time for the holiday season in November.

Here is Urban Outfitters response when contacted for a comment:

URBN is pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Waterloo Devon L.P. and will shortly be proposing a new version of the Devon Yards Project.  The revised proposal will address the residents’ concerns with certain elements of the neighboring mixed use development and parking garage by removing those structures, while creating a captivating town center including a large format Anthropologie store, Terrain garden center and Café with a boutique event space and multiple Vetri restaurant concepts.
