New Plasma Lighting Technology Grows Nutritious Vegetables

This spectral response graph demonstrates that Solar Genesis Plasma Lighting produces more full-spectrum nutritional light-energy within PAR (the spectrum of light plants utilize for healthy plant growth) in comparison to the partial spectrum of light produced by High Pressure Sodium.

Chameleon Grow Systems announced the release of its commercial Solar Genesisplasma horticulture lighting, which third-party research shows produces better veggies than traditional greenhouse lighting.

“We have been testing this light source for the past three years, and the full-spectrum nutritional light-energy produced by plasma lighting has produced excellent results,” says Chris Pieser, founder and president. “What differentiates us from the other manufacturers of plasma lighting is our proprietary reflector design, camera quality glass and the optical glass coating incorporated into our products.”

Plasma lighting technology is in a constant state of development. By the end of the year, the light output will double, making it better suited to take on the massive job of lighting greenhouses.

“We are focused on third-party scientific research to validate this technology and will not recommend our product until we are certain that plasma lighting is the right fit for the grower’s application,” Pieser says.

Third-Party Research

Chameleon Grow Systems is in its second year of research collaboration with Dr. Chiwon Lee, professor of plant sciences at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D.

Dr. Lee will be sharing the results at the upcoming American Society of Horticulture Science Annual Conference in Miami July 31 through Aug. 3, 2012. Here are some highlights of his studies:

Plasma vs. High Pressure Sodium (HPS) Lighting–Romaine Lettuce Growth Study Controlled Environmental Agriculture: Plasma lighting produced 311 percent more fresh weight in 33 percent less time while utilizing 33 percent less electricity.

Plasma vs. HPS–Tomato Growth Study Greenhouse Supplemental Lighting: Plasma lighting produced a 38 percent increase in fruit count with a 21 percent increase in fruit weight. In addition, plasma lighting produced more root mass, thicker stems and shorter inter-nodal growth. Plants under plasma lighting were also first to flower, first to fruit and had larger more consistent fruit with higher nutritional value and better taste. Plasma lighting is ideal for all stages of plant growth, including seed germination, vegetation and flowering.
