“Today’s consumers are looking for products that have a minimal impact on the environment, and can be considered earth-friendly or green,” says Jim Lee, Western’s marketing and sales manager. “We at Western feel that our products not only meet the demand for sustainability, but offer growers, retailers and consumers a better product to grow healthier plants.”

Go Green, Don’t Look Back

Western’s containers provide for healthier plants because they let roots and soil breathe while insulating from temperature extremes. In all kinds of climates and conditions, Western’s containers look better, last longer and perform better, while helping customers differentiate their product and improve plant quality. And because they are made from recycled paper, they’re biodegradable in the natural environment.

“In an effort to become ‘greener,’ our industry is offering possible container solutions from around the world,” Lee says. “As consumers begin to see these products in the marketplace, they will be the final judge as to how they are perceived and accepted. Not all products being considered will be successful. Our company feels that we need to do more than just offer products that are made from 100 percent recycled paper.”

To control costs, growers need to have containers fit their production system, benches and carts. They want confidence that containers being touted as sustainable or green will stand up to the rigors of producing a crop, yet maintain their strength and appearance when they arrive at retail and are appealing to the consumer, says Lee.

“If you truly are interested in becoming sustainable in your practices, then it is also important to give consideration to sourcing products from companies committed to our industry that will be here to support you in the future,” he says.

Lee adds that by using waste paper as its raw material, Western provides a valuable service to the industry by creating good products that are good for the environment.
