The Future Of Greenhouse Structures
We’re not predicting the end of the Quonset or big gutter-connect ranges. We do, however, believe you will see a dramatic change in the ways some traditional structures work, where greenhouses are built, or even what is considered a “greenhouse” in the future.

LEDs Reduce Costs For Greenhouse Tomato Growers According To Purdue Study
Tomatoes grown around LED lights in the winter can significantly reduce greenhouse energy costs without sacrificing yield, according to a Purdue University study. Cary Mitchell, a professor of horticulture, said the average tomato is shipped about 1,500 miles from warmer climates where they’re grown to cooler climates that cannot produce the fruit cost-effectively in the winter. That journey is costly, however, because tomatoes are picked green and ripen during shipping, decreasing quality and flavor. The lengthy shipping distance also adds to the industry’s carbon footprint. “It makes it really hard for the greenhouse industry to grow tomatoes well in the offseason. We’re trying to change that and make it affordable,” Mitchell said. Energy costs drive up prices for producers who might want to grow tomatoes in greenhouses in states that have winters inhospitable to growing food. Greenhouses must be heated, and shorter, overcast days require costly lighting. Mitchell and doctoral […]

Comparing LED Lighting To High-Pressure Sodium Lamps
Cuttings of vegetatively propagated bedding plants are frequently rooted in late winter and early spring to meet the spring and early summer market demand for flowering bedding plants. However, this is also the time when dirty and old glazing material, interior superstructures, and hanging baskets suspended above benches reduce already seasonally low ambient outdoor daily light integrals (DLIs) inside the greenhouse. Increasing the DLI during propagation has been shown to improve growth and quality of rooted cuttings, as well as reduce time to flower after transplanting. While maintaining clean glazing material, minimizing superstructure and reducing the density of hanging baskets may increase greenhouse DLI, the only way to appreciably increase DLI is to provide supplemental or photosynthetic lighting. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are solid-state, semi-conducting diodes that can emit light from ~250 nm to ≥1000 nm. There are several features of LEDs that make them attractive alternatives to high-pressure sodium (HPS) […]

Philips GreenPower LED Solutions Meets UL/CSA Certification Requirements
Philips, a company involved in lighting, manufacturing and applying lighting solutions for horticulture, is now certified for their GreenPower LED range. With LED lighting, the Growth Light can be tuned, which makes it possible to apply the optimum light recipe at every stage of a crop’s growth. This capability, together with effective heat management and energy efficiency, opens up new opportunities for growers and breeders. The UL/CSA certification underlines the high quality and performance and opens the way for sales and project activities in the USA and Canada. Underwriters Laboratories is an independent product safety certification organization that has been testing products and writing standards for safety for more than a century. Philips lighting solutions are based on close co-operation with the horticultural world. Successful field tests with growers and breeders around the globe gave insight into the growth effects of lighting on different crops throughout their growth cycle. This […]

LED Greenhouse Lighting Offers New Possibilities
by DRAKE STALIONS LIGHT-EMITTING diodes (LEDs) have long been recognized for their distinct benefits over traditional lighting technologies. Benefits such as long life, energy efficiency and flexibility in design and application have led designers to choose LEDs for a myriad of lighting applications. The evolution of LED technology over the past decade has been remarkable, with the LED and the solid-state lighting (SSL) market growing significantly over the past several years. However, when compared to the rest of the lighting industry, the introduction of LEDs into horticultural applications is much more recent and has only materialized over the last one to two years. The introduction of LEDs into the horticultural market is largely due to significant advancements in LED technology that allow for the manufacturing of high-power packages in specific wavelengths. Greenhouse operators and other commercial growers can benefit greatly from the energy savings and improved efficiency that LED […]
