Clean Fresh Food Increases Productivity With LumiGrow LED Greenhouse Light Solution

lumigrow-clean fresh foodIn line with a growing trend among forward-thinking greenhouse farm operators, Clean Fresh Food of Wisconsin installed energy-efficient greenhouse lighting to achieve healthy, year-round crop growth.

The LumiGrow Pro 325 solution selected by Clean Fresh Food uses 70 percent less energy than conventional high-intensity discharge (HID) greenhouse light fixtures. Clean Fresh Food says it is achieving an estimated 40 percent crop productivity gain with the LumiGrow LED lights.

The Clean Fresh Food team learned of LumiGrow products during a campus tour featuring energy-efficient agricultural lighting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since then, the team has installed 60 LumiGrow LED lights.

Clean Fresh Food grows various lettuce varieties, along with swiss chard and microgreens. The food is grown without pesticides. A balanced aquaponic system provides organic fertilizer for the plants, which absorb the nutrients and clean the water before it is cycled back to the fish tanks.

“LumiGrow LED lights cost less to operate and deliver better performance than HID lights,” says Clean Fresh Food Owner Mike Knight. “Just as important to us is that these energy-saving lights are consistent with the sustainable practices that form the foundation of our farm.”

Clean Fresh Food delivers produce the same day it is harvested by hand. Among the farm’s customers are fine dining restaurants and grocery stores in and around Madison, Wis. Clean Fresh Food limits its customer base to a 50-mile radius to preserve its commitment to locally sourced and freshly harvested food.

“Our lettuce is noticeably much fuller since we installed LumiGrow LED lights in the middle of our Wisconsin winter. We only wished we’d installed them sooner,” says grower Matt Roth of Clean Fresh Food adds.”

Technology Will Change the Face of Horticulture Within 20 Years

Every once in a while, I’ll see a grower post a video on social media, showing off some new transplanter, harvesting robot, or another kind of automation equipment and explaining what it is and how it’s making a difference in the growing operation. Inevitably, these videos get tons of clicks, likes, and comments. Most are from people outside the industry who say something like, “Wow, that’s really cool!” or “I had no idea greenhouses were so high-tech!” But then there are the folks who make comments about the automation taking away greenhouse jobs. The grower who posted the video typically responds, explaining that the automation actually doesn’t displace any workers — they’re just reassigned to higher value functions — and that reliable employees are extremely difficult to find in our industry, thus the need for automation. The reality is, due to our current labor struggles, it’s likely our industry will […]

Vertical Farming Looks to Go Mainstream

The University of the District of Columbia is the nation’s only urban land-grant university, so it was a particularly appropriate setting for the Association of Vertical Farming (AVF) to host the AVF Summit 2017 on September 22. The summit was a mix of education, advocacy, and policy discussion about urban agriculture — vertical farming in particular — targeted at finding ways to broaden its adoption in cities around the country and around the world. You’ve probably heard quite a bit in recent months about vertical farming — systems for growing food in stacked layers in completely controlled environments, applying inputs such as light, water, and fertilizer in precise amounts. While there’s some use of these systems in greenhouse settings, in many cases, urban farmers are repurposing abandoned buildings or even shipping containers. Match the availability of these facilities in most large urban areas with big cities’ limited access to fresh, […]
