Cornell IPM May Be Eliminated

Cornell University’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program may be eliminated after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed to end its funding last month.

According to The Cornell Daily Sun, four of IPM’s five departments will close on March 31 unless new sources of funding are found. Community is the only IPM department that will be unaffected, while fruits, vegetables, livestock and field crops, and ornamentals and community are at risk of being eliminated.

New York State proposed eliminating a $1 million state allocation last year. New York growers, however, pressured lawmakers to restore $500,000 to the program.

I know many will be upset by this move, but if every industry is succesful in keeping the projects they like safe from budget cutting the government will never be able to live within a budget. I would be happy to see the end of governmental involvement in programs that “help” our industry if we could also rid ourselves of all gevernmental medeling in our industry.
