Ecke’s Design Center weighs in with unique and creative displays demonstrating the latest colors and trends in retail packaging and merchandising ideas, as well as consumer home application designs. The parade of plant material demonstrated varietal differences. Exhibits in traditional pots showed stem length, cultivar vigor and bloom presentation.

New varieties include:

‘Jubilee Red’ – a vivid bright red with upright large bracts and a good-sized cyathia. Paul Ecke III expects big numbers on it next year. This variety also was added to Ecke’s Cold Grow program.

‘Red Glitter’ – provides a great color contrast, red with white flecked bracts displayed atop dark green foliage. Ecke Ranch says it is one of the easiest and most reliable poinsettias available to produce regardless of conditions. It is positioned as an alternative to ‘Sonora White Glitter.’

‘Luv U Pink’ – This variety has potential to break out of the “just for Christmas” mold with its brilliant pink color, which is perfect for breast cancer awareness promotions in October or for Easter and Mother’s Day. Flower form and habit is different than the traditional poinsettia. The plant does not have cyathia and forms into a double flower. It looks tropical and trailing and is an interspecific hybrid euphorbia.

‘Tis the season when Ecke Ranch captures headlines in the news, too. The Encinitas Patch reported on the poinsettia as the most misunderstood plant. Paul Ecke III assures us poinsettias are not poisonous and also advises us not to eat our Christmas trees.

The San Diego Union Tribune celebrates its local heritage surrounding poinsettias as the living symbol of Christmas.
