2014 Field Trials Results: University Display Gardens, University of Wisconsin, West Madison Agricultural Research Station (Verona, Wis.)
November 3, 2014 This year, the University of Wisconsin evaluated 185 varieties. The winter of 2013-2014 was exceptionally cold, with lows around -25˚F. Garden Manager Brian Emerson says he saw quite a bit of damage on perennial flowers and fruit.
June was quite wet with 9.7 inches of precipitation for the month, about 4.5 in. above normal. Emerson says while the rain was welcome after planting, it came at a price of slow growth on transplants, probably as a result of the leaching of nitrogen out of the shallow root zone.
