AAS Unveils Latest 2010 Award Winners

All America Selections unveiled its latest 2010 award winners Monday. They are:

Echinacea purpurea ‘PowWow Wild Berry’
–Marigold African ‘Moonsong Deep Orange’
–Zinnia ‘Double Zahara Cherry’
–Zinnia ‘Double Zahara Fire’

Echinacea purpurea ‘PowWow Wild Berry’ has a unique deep rose-purple flower color with large 3- to 4-inch flowers that retain color longer. It is a first-year flowering perennial if sown by January 25, hardy to Zone 3 and blooms continually without deadheading. ‘PowWow Wild Berry,’ bred by PanAmerican Seed, reaches 20 to 24 inches in height.

Marigold African ‘Moonsong Deep Orange,’ meanwhile, has intense deep orange flower color with large, fade-resistant 2.5- to 3.5-inch flowers. It features double blooms, stress tolerance and flowers in about 70 days under short days. ‘Moonsong Deep Orange’ reaches 12 to 15 inches tall. It was bred by Syngenta Flowers.

Zinnia ‘Double Zahara Cherry,’ another PanAmerican variety, is resistant to leaf spot and mildew diseases. It features 2.5-inch double blooms, is ideal for container gardening and matures to about 12 inches. ‘Double Zahara’ Cherry’ is also heat tolerant.

Another zinnia, ‘Double Zahara Fire,’ from PanAmerican, is equally resistant to leaf spot and mildew diseases. Like ‘Double Zahara Cherry,’ this zinnia features 2.5-inch double blooms yet has an orange-scarlet flower color. ‘Double Zahara Fire’ blooms in about eight to 10 weeks.
