It was only a year ago that Takii Seed celebrated its remarkable 175th anniversary and Greenhouse Grower recognized the legendary flower and vegetable breeder with its Medal of Excellence for Industry Achievement.
Takii is celebrating year 176 with a few new standouts and additions to existing series. One item that particularly stands out among Takii’s 2012 varieties is Glamour Red, the flowering kale that was named an All America Selections winner this year. Takii is touting Glamour Red as the first shiny-leafed bedding-type kale in the world. Its striking color pulled me in as I entered Takii’s showroom.
Another kale, Song Bird, is new with three colors: Pink, Red and White. These are more compact than Glamour Red, and they’re bred upright for better rain drainage.
Other noteworthy Takii introductions include: Audray White gomphrena, which joins Bicolor Rose, Pink and Purple; an apricot to the Fantasy linaria series; and a pair of improved frosty blues in the Iona pansy and Gem series, respectively. Scarlet is another new color in Gem.
