At the California Spring Trials, every grower expects to see something new and exciting for the following year. This time around, Ball Horticultural Company and its many divisions worked to create a stunning lineup for 2013. From vegetables to perennials, these varieties are sure to delight no matter what you’re growing.
Selecta North America is set to introduce a continuous flowering carnation. The Everlast garden carnation prefers cold weather but can still take the heat. Described as both a “low-maintenance premium annual or perennial offering,” Everlast promises simple production with longer lasting color.
Those looking for an explosion of color should see out Ball FloraPlant’s ‘Patchwork Cosmic Orange’ impatiens. Ideal for hanging baskets, Patchwork impatiens come in three distinct patterns (Cosmic Orange, Burgundy and Pink Ice) and bloom big. A short crop time also allows for fast finishes.
Veggie growers might want to add one or all of the six new Bumper Crop grafted tomatoes to their rosters. This line from Burpee Home Gardens includes ‘Big Rainbow,’ ‘Black Krim,’ ‘Brandywine Pink,’ ‘Brandywine Red,’ ‘Mortgage Lifter,’ and ‘San Marzano.’ All the tomatoes are described as being disease tolerant and having growing success while providing more of their signature heirloom flavor.
Fans of PanAmerican Seed’s Serena angelonia might want to check out the company’s more compact Serenita. This low-water needs plant boasts high deer and rabbit tolerance, a need for fewer plant growth regulators and the same crop time as its mother plant with no pinching required.
For a well-branched plant with double coneflowers and a reliable finish, take a look at Darwin Perennials’ well-liked Double Scoop series. The new ‘Double Scoop Cranberry’ echinacea provides a high flower count with a long-lasting bloom time in a deep cranberry shade.
