California Spring Trials Day Five: Notable New Plant Varieties from Ball Horticultural Company and GroLink

The Greenhouse Grower team spent a busy day visiting Ball Horticultural Co. and GroLInk Plant Company. Darwin Perennials displayed 19 perennial introductions for 2018, and is venturing into new territory with offerings in the grass and dianthus categories. Both Darwin and Kieft Seed have been putting some research into helping growers learn to program and time perennials, so they are in flower and fresh on the retail shelf. Burpee and PanAmerican had several new vegetables for all categories of growers, from those looking to sell produce and veggie starts to home gardeners and foodies. Selecta offered several new intros, as well. Among them was a pink Night Sky petunia, now part of the Headliner Series. Notable at Ball FloraPlant was one of the first sterile lantanas, certified by the University of Florida.

More than 14 companies displayed at GroLink Plant Company. Hort Couture’s farm-to-table display caught everyone’s eye, with new plant intros as the main course. It was also hard not to miss Suntory Flowers’ display of bright-red Surfinia Trailing Red petunias. Plant Haven featured a mix of new intros, ranging from dianthus and dahlias to colocasia and miscanthus. There were also some striking vincas at Ameriseed.
