California Spring Trials Day One – New Plant Varieties from Danziger, Syngenta, and Proven Winners

Greenhouse Grower editors, along with Allan Armitage and Tyler Beasley, the Allan Armitage Spring Trials scholarship winner, kicked off their California Spring Trials 2017 tour at Danziger “Dan” Flower Farm with a look at several new petunias ranging from the new Capella Series with three colors to some new Cascadias for premium baskets. Danziger is also ramping up its bidens breeding program, looking to bring out even more colors in addition to ‘Blazing Fire’ and ‘Pretty in Pink,’ which are new this year.

Sunfinity Sunflowers took center stage at Syngenta Flowers. These are continuous bloomers that gardeners can enjoy outdoors, then bring indoors for a bright spot of color as a cut flower. Syngenta encouraged growers to trial its new ‘Aria’ and ‘Majoris’ Poinsettias this year, promising more exciting new intros for next year. Obsession Cascade Verbenas were also on display. They are the first trailing seed verbenas on the market.

The last stop of the day was Proven Winners, which had some nice double-flowered varieties, including some new double Superbells and a double calendula (‘Lady Godiva’), which is also a new genera for Proven Winners. There was also a double flowered Osteospermum ‘Bright Lights,’ with blooms that stay open all day. The Proven Winners Perennial Collection also has new genera – Aruncus ‘Chantilly Lace’ and its first echinacea (‘Lakota Santa Fe’).
