Flower Breeders Making Donations for Heart Disease and Cancer Research

Grateful Heart Rose featureFlower breeders are showing their generosity by marketing plants and flowers for a cause — and consumers are grabbing them up.

Jackson & Perkins is donating $5 for each Grateful Heart Rose sold to the American Heart Association and its Life Is Why We Give campaign. The breeder has “fallen in love” with the Grateful Heart rose so much that it named it the 2017 Rose of the Year for its exceptional form, performance, and cause.

Proven Winners ColorChoice recently announced that its Invincibelle Spirit Campaign has raised more than $973,000 for breast cancer research, and is on track to surpass the $1 million benchmark this year. Since 2009, the campaign has supported the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) by donating one dollar for every Invincibelle Spirit Hydrangea sold, and through Pink Day fundraisers hosted by independent garden centers. Proven Winners ColorChoice selected the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to receive proceeds from the sale of Invincibelle Spirit because it is the highest rated breast cancer organization in the U.S.

Invincibelle Spirit II hydrangea, a reliable rebloomer that performs in every zone, was added to the Proven Winners ColorChoice shrub line in 2015. From the continued H. arborescens breeding of Tom Ranney, this new introduction improves upon the original Invincibelle Spirit with brighter flower color, stronger stems, and superior container presentation, while continuing the legacy of donations to the BCRF.
