Michael Dirr Slated To Address Attendees At Hydrangeas 2015

Hydrangea 'Endless Summer BloomStruck' from Bailey Nurseries

The Hydrangeas 2015 conference, held July 14 to 16 in Cape Cod, Mass., will feature Dr. Michael Dirr as its keynote speaker. Dirr is a horticulturist, author and founding partner of Plant Introductions, which was recently acquired by Bailey Nurseries. His presentation, “The History of Hydrangeas — Earliest Introductions To Current Developments,” will cover breeding advancements that have led to a comeback of these popular ornamental shrubs.

The Cape Cod Hydrangea Society, in conjunction with Endless Summer Hydrangeas, will host the conference at the historic Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich, Mass. Heritage cares for the Society’s hydrangea collection, and has an extensive collection of its own. It is also well-known for its rhododendrons.

Planned events for the conference include tours of significant Cape Cod gardens, onsite displays by hydrangea suppliers and plant stalls by local nurseries featuring hundreds of hydrangeas. Attendees can expect to see some of the newest introductions and breeding innovations in hydrangeas to date during the three days of the conference.

Coming up with a solution for lantana’s invasive nature has been a passion project for UF/IFAS Plant Scientist Zhanao Deng. His mission was set forth after local industry stakeholders asked if it was possible to breed sterile, non-invasive lantana selections. After more than a decade of research, Deng successfully developed and delivered two new lantana varieties designed to accommodate nursery managers, retailers, and consumers. According to Deng, ‘Bloomify Rose’ and ‘Bloomify Red’ are not only visually appealing, but they also don’t produce fruit and seeds, don’t spread, and don’t cross-pollinate Florida’s native lantana, Lantana depressa. Rick Brown, Owner of Riverview Flower Farm in Riverview, FL, has sold the new varieties for about a year and can attest to their assets. “They are relatively a perpetually bloomer,” […]
