American Floral Endowment Hires Industry Leader to Guide Future Fundraising Efforts

Edwardsville, Illinois, January 12, 2007–The American Floral Endowment has announced the appointment of Sten Crissey, Seattle, Washington, to the new position of Vice President of Development and Industry Relations. “The Endowment trustees are delighted that someone of Sten’s experience and stature has agreed to take on this pivotal role,” said AFE incoming Chairman, Mike Mellano.

Effective February 1, Crissey will begin his work in raising awareness for the Endowment and forging stronger ties throughout the industry. The Endowment’s goal is to develop a successful major gift and planned giving program to complement the current fund raising efforts. “Sten knows first hand the terrific potential that research and education can bring to the product we sell, with the ultimate benefit going to the millions of people who enjoy flowers and plants everyday,” Mellano said. 

Crissey, former owner of Crissey’s, Inc. in Seattle, WA, has been active in the floral industry since the 1970s. He has served as president of both the Society of American Florists and the Northwest Florists Association and is a member of the American Academy of Floriculture. In 2004, he was inducted into SAF’s Floriculture Hall of Fame and has also been the recipient of the Paul Ecke Jr. Award. He has also provided service to the Endowment as Trustee, Past-Treasurer and Current Chairman, a position he will relinquish in order to fulfill his Vice Presidential responsibilities. He has had formal training in fundraising at “The Fund Raising School”, a program of “The Center on Philanthropy” at Indiana University and has been an active volunteer fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity.

The National Greenhouse Manufacturers Association Hires Management Company

Harrisburg, PA—The National Greenhouse Manufacturers Association (NGMA) recently contracted with Calabrese & Heuser Organizational Resource Group, an association management company based out of Harrisburg, PA.

Denise R. Calabrese has been named the Executive Director of NGMA. Calabrese has been working in non-profit management for the past 19 years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her focus has been in public affairs, public relations, fundraising, strategic planning, media relations, and crisis communications.

Following her graduation with a degree in Mass Communications from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, Denise began her career specializing in communications with the Pennsylvania Nurserymen’s Association (PNA). Following her employment with the PNA, Calabrese served as Sr. Vice-President of Communications and Community Relations with the United Way of the Capitol Region.

In January 2001, Calabrese founded an association management company with her business partner, Patricia Heuser. The company currently represents the interests of seventeen (17) non-profit organizations.

Calabrese personally serves as Executive Director of nine (9) of those organizations, including NGMA. In addition to Calabrese serving as Executive Director, NGMA staff will include Amy Bell, Database and Financial Manager; Bethany Dennis, Communications Manager; and Tonya Weikel, Customer Service Representative.

Rich Reilly, President of NGMA and President of Rough Brothers, Inc. located in Cincinnati, Ohio, said of the change, “Our board conducted an extensive search for an Executive Director to move NGMA forward. After review of 45 qualified applicants, Calabrese and staff were selected. I am excited to begin a new phase that will surely invigorate and advance NGMA as the premier trade association for our industry.”

NGMA is a professional trade organization for the manufacturers and suppliers of greenhouses and greenhouse components. The association represents all segments of the greenhouse marketplace to enhance the effectiveness of each in a coordinated effort to promote and advance the entire industry.
