New Volume On Missouri Plants

The Missouri Botanical Garden has released a new book that deals in depth with nearly 1⁄3 of Missouri’s wild plants and weeds. Steyermark’s Flora of Missouri, Second Edition: Volume 2 is the culmination of six years of research on the plants included in it. Dr. George Yatskievych, the volume’s author and a member of the Garden’s research staff, in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation, has now completed an up-to-date treatment of the state’s botanical riches.

Flora includes descriptions, identification keys, flowering times and habitat information, along with new, original illustrations of nearly all of the species. Data from more than 120,000 preserved plant specimens was analyzed to create dot maps of the occurrence of every kind of plant included in each of the state’s 115 counties.

To date, nearly 400 native and introduced plant species have been added to the state’s flora since its original publication. The 1,200-page volume contains information on more than 900 species.

Volume 2 of Steyermark’s Flora of Missouri, Second Edition was published by Missouri Botanical Garden Press and is available for $48 plus shipping cost. Volume 1 of Flora is also currently available for $38 plus shipping. The release of Volume 3 is planned in approximately five years.
